Ginsburg, Madeleine. Victorian Dress in Photographs. New York: Holmes & Meier Publishers, Inc., 1983.
This book is as much about photography as it is about dress. I do not have sufficient background in photography to know how effectively or accurately the book treats with that topic, and have not read the full text, but am always somewhat skeptical of costume books from this period; they frequently employ generalizations and under-use citations. However, this book has an excellent collection of photographs, each one of which is discussed in detail, many of which are quite early, making it an unusually helpful resource in the study of very early Victorian (late 1830s and early 1840s) clothing. There are also some excellent images of laborers in simple clothing, from different regions, which are, again, fairly hard to find. It is not instructional. It has monochrome images. It has a bibliography and index.
