AB: Tozer – Fabric of Society

(This is an entry in the Annotated Bibliography.)

Tozer, Jane, and Sarah Levitt. Fabric of Society: A Century of People and their Clothes 1770-1870: Essays inspired by the collections at Platt Hall, The Gallery of English Costume, Manchester. Carno, Powys, Wales: Laura Ashley Limited, 1983.

While somewhat disjointed and oddly organized, this book is an extremely useful resource with a wide variety of interesting topics covered. It contains interesting essays, period images, and full color photographs of extant garments and textiles, centering around the Gallery of English Costume, a museum in Britain. Despite the organizational difficulties, the book is beautiful and useful, with an excellent attention to detail. It is not instructional but has images showing construction. It contains monochrome and full color images. It contains a Reading List rather than a bibliography.
